這是西蒙·拉特首次執棒除夕音樂會，當時的他作為柏林愛樂樂團的新任掌門人，似乎想要以這麼一場標新立異的演出宣告自己的時代到來了。
拉特早年就錄製過伯恩斯坦的音樂劇《奇妙的小鎮》，這次他直接把這部通俗作品的精彩段落搬上了音樂會舞台，柏林愛樂大廳搖身一變成了夜總會。
